The Challenge

In April 2025, Opella stepped into a defining new chapter - emerging from Sanofi’s consumer healthcare division as an independent global leader in OTC and VMS. With this shift came a clear mandate: establish Opella as a self-care champion in its own right, not a legacy division.

Its new Mumbai office, home to key GBS, Quality, Finance, HR, and Sales teams, was envisioned as a physical expression of this identity shift. Conventional corporate design wouldn’t do. The space needed to act as a catalyst for transformation.

The design challenge centered on four strategic imperatives:

Differentiating from a traditional pharmaceutical aesthetic in favour of warmth and accessibility.

Embedding employee wellness, sustainability, and human-centred values into the workplace.

Breaking down functional silos to enable collaboration across teams.

Creating a compelling environment that attracts top talent in India’s competitive consumer healthcare landscape.

The Solution

The design approach rejected conventional corporate formulas in favor of a powerful conceptual framework: The Tree of Life. This served as a strategic positioning device, communicating Opella's dual identity—rooted in Sanofi’s scientific legacy yet branching out into bold new consumer territory. Symbolizing growth, interconnectedness, renewal, and resilience, the metaphor provided the foundation to translate Opella's strategic challenges into intentional spatial strategies.

1. Engineering Cross-Functional Collaboration

The primary strategic intervention was leveraging space planning to engineer serendipitous encounters and break down the inherited functional silos.

Central Workcafé Placement (The Engine of Convergence): The communal Workcafé was intentionally placed at the geographic center of the floor plate—not at the periphery. This critical placement ensures that all functional teams (GBS, Finance, Quality, HR, Sales) must naturally converge at this point multiple times daily. This layout maximizes "collision points," turning routine movement into opportunities for informal, cross-pollination dialogue, which is the engine of innovation.

Circulation Through Collaborative Hubs: Primary circulation paths were designed to flow through activated collaborative zones rather than around them. This spatial logic removes friction, encouraging employees to encounter opportunities for spontaneous discussion during normal movement.

Activated Collaboration Zones and Privacy Balance: Collaborative and breakout areas were located centrally to signal that collaboration is a core operational priority. Furthermore, phone rooms were positioned adjacent to these hubs. This critical design choice acknowledges that innovation requires both spontaneous interaction and readily available quiet spaces, preventing the lack of privacy from undermining open-plan productivity.

2. Establishing a Differentiated Identity and Human-Centered Culture

To visually and experientially differentiate Opella from its pharmaceutical past, the design prioritized warmth, transparency, and brand storytelling.

The Transparent Arrival Experience: The entrance breaks the traditional corporate mold. Semi-open shelving and clear sight lines into the workspace immediately communicate openness and transparency, a stark contrast to the closed-door culture of the pharmaceutical sector. A bold stained green veneer grid at the reception, Opella's signature color, provides an immediate, modern brand marker signaling vitality and growth.

Materiality of Self-Care: The material palette focuses on jute, wooden textures, and warm, lighter hues. This tactile, natural strategy differentiates the space from the clinical, cold environments of traditional pharma, reinforcing Opella’s accessible, human-centered positioning as a self-care brand.

Brand Activation Through Space: A sophisticated strategy was deployed in the meeting rooms: each room features a distinct color palette inspired by Opella's product brands. This turns daily spatial experience into a continuous, subtle form of internal brand education and reinforcement for employees, making the company’s diverse portfolio tangible.

3. Tangible Commitment to Wellness and Sustainability

Opella’s commitment to wellness had to be operationalized, not just advertised. The design used biophilia and smart space planning to enhance employee wellbeing.

Biophilia and Productivity: Natural materials, planter-integrated seating, and tropical patterns were integrated throughout to leverage biophilic design principles, which research shows reduce stress and boost creativity—critical for innovation teams.

Daylight Maximization as a Wellness Tool: The design prioritized natural light access, a key biophilic and productivity driver. All open work areas were positioned on the perimeter to maximize natural daylight. Consequently, internal meeting rooms were placed closer to the core, ensuring every employee's primary workspace receives optimal light and views. This demonstrates a tangible commitment to employee health, transforming wellness from a marketing claim into a functional reality.

Flexibility and Choice: The Workcafé and collaboration hubs offer varied seating options (lounge clusters, high tables, booth seating). This focus on choice and autonomy is a core strategy for attracting and retaining modern talent, signaling Opella's investment in employee experience and working flexibility.

The strategic placement of the central Workcafé and the engineered circulation paths successfully broke down functional silos, fostering unprecedented organic cross-pollination of ideas and knowledge-sharing between teams.

By prioritizing natural light access for open workspaces and embedding biophilic elements, Opella provided tangible proof of its commitment to employee health, leading to improved satisfaction, reduced fatigue, and strengthened sense of organizational pride.

The combination of flexibility, a human-centered palette, and a focus on employee experience has established the Mumbai office as a powerful recruitment and retention asset.
